Course Description

This course will familiarize the student with the concept of Quality Management and Performance Improvement across the Health Care continuum. This course focuses on the evolution of quality from management to assurance and finally to improvement. The paradigm shift from risk management to patient safety will be explored. The student will be introduced to different methods of improving quality management such as Total Quality Management, Lean Management and Plan-Do-Check Act (PDCA) Cycle. The students will closely examine the two landmarks reports by the Institute of Medicine (IOM), To Err is Human and Crossing the Quality Chasm, leading to the understanding of the IOM's goals to make quality health care more safe, timely, effective, equitable, efficient, and patient-centered.

Prerequisite: HSAM2300 & HSAM2350 3 Credits
