PSYC6010 - Counseling Psyc: Orient/Ethics

This course provides an overview of the aspects of professional functioning in counseling psychology including history, roles, ethics and professional practices, and credentialing.
Prerequisite: Admittance into MS in Counseling Psychology program. 3 Credits

PSYC6020 - Career Development

Spring 2024

This course introduces students to the field of career development counseling. The course focuses on theories of career development and gives students practical experience administering career assessment tests. The theories and the assessments will cover interest inventories, personality inventories, aptitude testing, and achievement testing. Career issues and crises across the lifespan and the career developmental needs of minorities, women, and other protected classes will be explored. By the end of the course, students will have an understanding of the field of career development counseling and practical experience in administering some of the common instruments used in the field.
Prerequisite: Admittance into MS in Counseling Psychology program. 3 Credits

PSYC6040 - Grief and Bereavement

Spring 2024

The purpose of this course is to introduce students to the theories, assessments and treatments necessary for counseling professionals planning to work with adults, children, and families dealing with bereavement. The class will focus on the psychological, physical, and spiritual aspects of death, dying, and bereavement as well as gain an understanding of the mourning process and types of losses. The class will offer an overview of the historical, cultural and religious diversity, developmental context, community, emerging trends, and legal/ethical dimensions of death, dying, and bereavement. 3 Credits

PSYC6050 - Foundations Of Addiction

Spring 2024

This course is designed to provide an in-depth and broad survey of addictions and substance abuse treatment. We will examine major categories of substances of abuse, theories regarding addiction as well as the primary models of intervention. Counseling approaches, techniques and strategies will be introduced to complement lectures and other materials. The student will develop a thorough understanding of addiction and its impact across all client populations, even in non-drug and alcohol settings, and its implications for society as a whole. 3 Credits

Spring 2024

This course presents an overview of human development across the lifespan. Students will gain an understanding of the physical, cognitive, emotional, social, and moral growth that occurs during each period of development. Emphasis will be placed on theories, research, and techniques that can be used to address developmental needs, abnormal behavior, and multicultural factors that commonly arise in a therapeutic setting. 3 Credits

PSYC6070 - Research/Program Evaluation

Spring 2024

This course offers a study of the methods and application of psychological research and it is intended to provide a knowledge foundation from which you could design and conduct an independent research project. The skills and knowledge of research are necessary for you to be able to demonstrate accountability and determine what works and what does not work with your particular client base. Although some time will be devoted to descriptive and non-experimental research, the course will emphasize experimental and quasi-experimental designs for drawing causal inferences. This course should provide you with tools to recognize testable hypotheses, plan as well as critically evaluate studies in your field, as well as gather, analyze, interpret, and present data. As such, it is expected that you will develop an informed appreciation of the role and contribution of science in your profession from the perspective of researchers as well as consumers of research. 3 Credits

PSYC7010 - Theories Of Counseling

The purpose of this course is to provide students with a survey of the major theoretical models in counseling psychology. Students will be exposed to an overview of psychodynamic, existential, humanistic, cognitive-behavioral, gestalt, reality, systems, and integrative approaches. Emphasis will be placed on understanding and application of theory to client populations. Through lecture, discussion, readings, writing, and experiential exercises, students will begin the process of developing their own theoretical orientation. 3 credits.

PSYC7070 - Child/Adolescent Counseling

Spring 2024

This course introduces students to the identification and diagnosis of general mental, emotional, and behavioral disorders of childhood and adolescents. Developmental, social, and cultural influences on diagnoses and treatment interventions will be considered. Topics of interest include: assessment & interviewing, therapeutic engagement, group techniques, anxiety disorders, social rejection, attachment disorders, depressive disorders, substance use, process addiction, self-injury, trauma related conditions, disruptive behavior disorders, family support, divorce, and resourcing strategies with school personnel.

This course introduces students to numerous marriage and family theories, as well as the history of marriage and family therapy. The information in this class is designed to equip trainees for practice in their field placements. Diversity factors, life cycle stages and family history will be considered in establishing the therapeutic relationship and conceptualizing the family. 3 Credits

Spring 2024

Includes a study of counseling skills, process and strategies. Focus is placed on developing individual approaches to therapy consistent with the needs of the client and attributes of the therapist. The development of technical and case conceptualization skills and self-awareness are included through supervised practice. 3 credits.

This beginning counseling practicum includes a minimum of 100 hours of supervised experience observation, feedback, and experience using a variety of counseling modalities.

PSYC7420 - Counseling Psych Internship I

Spring 2024

A minimum of 300 hours of supervised clinical experience in an approved off-campus internship setting. This course is the first of two internships as required by the Pennsylvania LPC board. The course provides students with further direct therapy experience and supervision at a community agency, hospital, counseling center of their choice with the program's prior approval. Specifically, the course is intended to enhance your therapy, diagnostic, and/or assessment skills in accordance with ACA Ethics Codes and legal requirements for the LPC in Pennsylvania. 3 Credits

Examines theory, research, and practice of clinical supervision. A lab component is included whereby students are supervised in providing supervision and consultation.
