HLSC1010 - Healthcare Conc & Med Term

Spring 2024

Healthcare Concepts and Medical Terminology: This course teaches the language of healthcare while also introducing the student to conceptual learning within the healthcare arena. The medical terminology component includes symbols, abbreviations and acronyms common in a variety of healthcare settings. Students will learn prefixes, suffixes and root words to help the student build a medical vocabulary. This course also explores professional healthcare roles and responsibilities, communication in healthcare, evidence-based practice, quality & safety, interprofessional collaboration & teamwork, social determinants of health and other concepts relevant to those interested in pursuing a career in the health sciences.

HLSC1020 - Health Science Foundations

Spring 2024

This course introduces foundational concepts related to the direct and indirect care of healthcare consumers. Students will build on existing medical terminology and healthcare concepts knowledge, develop medical math and assessment skills, and apply communication and technical skills required in various healthcare settings. Students will complete Basic Life Support (BLS) Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation (CPR) Training to earn their certification. 3 Credit Pre-req: HLSC 1010

HLSC3000 - Foundations Of Kinesiology

This course introduces concepts related to physical activity, movement,and health, including the application of assessing, maintaining, and improving muscular strength, endurance, and flexibility of individuals. Skeletal and muscular structures are examined through the lens of physical activity and the promotion of human health. The course introduces the history of kinesiology, builds on scientific principles of movement and health, and applies research from the health sciences.

HLSC4803 - Health Science Thesis

This course will provide support to students engaged in a personal project that ties together undergraduate course work, the student?s experiences in the health sciences, individual research by the student in an area of interest and identifies an area in the future of health that the student identifies as a personal priority in terms of future commitment.

HLSC4903 - Health Sciences Internship

Spring 2024

This course provides an academic structure for supervised internships in health-focused organizations. The student will complete 120 hours of documented experience at a pre-approved (by the program director) internship site. The student?s experience may be a volunteer or paid position that is related to their career goals. The student will explore potential career paths and develop mentorship relationships and networks that will support professional advancement. Additionally, the student will apply health sciences theoretical knowledge and skills in a work setting. This course requires 120 hours on site, as well as the completion of the academic requirements established by the Department of Psychology and Health Sciences.
Prerequisites/Co-requisites: HSAM 4250 or PSYC3100, 90 credits completed, and program director approval
