Course Details

Section will be taught totally online with no scheduled class meetings. Students must arrange for daily access to a computer and the Internet prior to the start of classes. Robert Morris labs are to be used only as a backup in special situations and may not be relied upon for extended periods of time. In addition to the Internet link, online classes have a large emphasis on email. Course Description

In this course, students will be introduced to the nonprofit organization and sector. To this end, students will review the purpose and history of the sector, its current state, and future trajectories at the local, national, and global levels. This includes an introduction into the distinct role nonprofits play for service and social change, the roles of nonprofit leaders and various stakeholders, a review of different careers within the nonprofit sector, and a survey of theories used to better understand the contested concept of organizational effectiveness. This also includes an examination of legal framework and various organizational forms that nonprofits can take. Through group discussions, case study analyses, and opportunities for real world application, this course provides students with a practical introduction into, and an overview of, the nonprofit sector. 3 Credits
