Course Description

This course emphasizes employee compensation, strategies and practices extant in organizations. We examine both the strategic and tactical approaches to compensation as well as the intrinsic and extrinsic dimensions that motivate individuals to undertake their jobs and the requirements associated with each position. The course focuses on the use of employee compensation as a source to attract and retain the best possible talent for an organization conducting business in the current competitive work environment. Emphasis will be placed on understanding the labor market in which organizations operate, and the major factors for establishing effective compensation packages: the internal consistency of wage evaluation, external competitiveness within the industry and the marketplace, recognition of employee contributions to organizations for compensation received, and the costs associated with administering pay packages. Review of legal compliance and the issue of comparable worth in the workplace are also undertaken.
