Course Description

Disability Studies and Service Learning Abroad is a Center for Global Engagement travel experience to Belgrade, the capital of Serbia, and Herceg Novi, Montenegro (on the Adriatic Sea). Students will partner with Lifeline Humanitarian Organization Chicago, under the patronage of HRH Princess Katherine of Serbia, to observe first-hand the complexities of deinstitutionalization and the social construct of disability. This partnership will provide RMU students from a variety of majors the opportunity to work with and support children with and without disabilities, and to engage with professionals in the fields of psychology, special education, general education, non-profit organization, and other related areas. The experience will also give undergraduate students the chance to add to the current inclusive conversations occurring in the Balkans. This zero credit course is open to all majors, and satisfies both the service and study abroad components of the SET.
