Course Description

This is the first in a three-course calculus sequence. Topics covered include limits, continuity, derivatives, rules for derivation, applications, and related rates; optimization techniques for extrema including Rolle's and mean value theorems; first and second derivative tests; curve sketching; differentials and indefinite integrals; Riemann Sums; integration techniques, and the Fundamental Theorem of Calculus. The material in this course is presented by lecture and group discussion. The instructor will discuss material with the students and explain important illustrations of the material. In order for the student to recognize, arrange, and employ important concepts, the instructor will frequently ask questions during the lecture to develop a two-way communication with the class. The instructor may make use of computer software and graphing calculators to illustrate certain concepts to the students if desired. The teaching methods to be used in MATH2070 may include, but are not limited to, the following: Lectures/discussions Group tasks and learning assignments. Demonstration and interpretation of applications software. Use of textbook materials and homework assignments. Use of handout materials provided by the course instructor. Weighted student evaluations based on the results of individual examinations, i ndividual and group projects, problems, and computer assignments. Use of audiovisual materials, such as transparencies and videos. Pre-Requisites: MATH1020 OR by Departmental Placement Exam
