How to find your MAC Address


The following instructions will assist you in finding the MAC address of your network card. The MAC address, sometimes called the physical address, adapter address, or the hardware address, allows us to identify you on the network so that we can assign you a TCP/IP address. It is a twelve-character sequence that usually looks like this:

00-E0-29-44-9b-2b -OR- 00:E0:29:44:9b:2b

Click on your operating system below for instructions on finding your MAC address.

XP

  1. Open control panel, Network Connections.
  2. Select the icon for the LAN interface, right-click it, and select Status.
  3. Click tab Support.
  4. Click button Details.
  5. Look for the line Physical Address.

    *Your MAC Address is listed as the Physical Address.

  1. Click Start | Programs | Command Prompt
  2. In the MS-DOS Command Prompt Window, type ipconfig/all
  3. Look for the section describing the Ethernet Adapter settings.

    *Your MAC Address is listed as the Physical Address.


Macintosh: Mac OS X
Mac OS X comes with a Network Utility. You will find it in your root drive under Applications | Utilities

  1. Click the Network Utility icon to open it.
  2. Click on the Info tab.
  3. Select a network interface for information e.g. Ethernet Interface (en0)

    *Under Interface Information, your MAC address is listed as the Hardware Address.


Macintosh: Mac OS 8.x & 9.x

  1. Connect your computer to the Ethernet point.
  2. Select Apple, choose Control Panels, and choose TCP/IP.
  3. Click on the Info button to determine the hardware address.

    *The number after the Hardware address: line is your MAC address.

    If the hardware address does not show up in the Infopanel, close the Info panel.

    1. Select Edit from the top bar, choose User Mode, choose Advanced, click OK
    2. Click Info again

    The number after the Hardware address line is your MAC address.


Macintosh: Mac System 7.x

  1. Select Apple, choose Control Panels, and choose MacTCP.
  2. Hold down the Option key and click on the Ethernet icon.

    *The MAC address is displayed directly beneath the Ethernet icon.


Linux

  1. At the shell, type % ifconfig | grep Ethernet
  2. If this fails you may have to use the full path % /sbin/ifconfig | grep Ethernet
  3. Your MAC Address is listed after Hwaddr in the line (e.g):
    eth0 Link encap:Ethernet Hwaddr 00:E0:29:45:2A:ED
