Course Description
This course provides a framework for examining families and understanding family processes. An overview of the major schools and principles in family therapy will be provided. Students will explore the meaning of family dysfunction as defined by various family theories/frameworks. Attention is focused on the practical aspects of conducting family therapy which includes family assessment and the impact of life cycle development, developing case conceptualizations, and delivering therapeutic interventions to families. Family problems, with an emphasis on cultural and social differences, commonly encountered in advanced practice psychiatric nursing will be included.
