Course Description

This honors seminar explores the relation between torture and democracy in theory and practice from different perspectives. It analyzes the different understandings of the term torture, and surveys exemplary cases in which torture occurred in democracies. The question of a possible legitimacy and legalization of torture in a liberal democracy is explored from a variety of theoretical perspectives.
