Course Description

This course is recommended for certified teachers hoping to gain a deeper understanding of content and pedagogical techniques in Biology/Life Science. The National Science Teachers Association Standards for Science Teacher Certification and the Pennsylvania State Standards in Science & Technology are a major focus. The topics in this course may include, but not be limited to: -inclusion of inquiry-based approaches to life science instruction -bioenergetics, including major biochemical pathways -molecular genetics, heredity, and mechanisms of genetic modification -teaching of controversial topics and bioethical issues -molecular basis for evolutionary theory and classification -causes, characteristics and avoidance of viral, bacterial, and parasitic diseases -ecology and sustainable natural resources -how to design, conduct, and report research in biology -applications of biology and biotechnology to society Various laboratory techniques and instructional technologies will be employed throughout the course to foster discovery and to gain insights into these concepts.
