Phi Beta Sigma Fraternity Inc. was founded on the campus of Howard University on Jan. 9, 1914. The founders, the Hon. A. Langston Taylor, the Hon. Leonard F. Morse and the Hon. Charles I. Brown, wanted to organize a fraternity that would truly exemplify the high ideals of brotherhood, scholarship and service. They believed that each potential member should be judged on his own merits rather than his family affluence, without regard to race, nationality, color, skin tone or texture of hair. The fraternity motto is "Culture for Service and Service for Humanity."
