It is important to remember that each of us has the potential to be happy and to be active in the meeting of our needs. Below are some examples of how to maximize self-esteem.
- Remember that your relationship to you is the number one determinant of how happy you can be and how well you can relate to others.
- Differentiate between being lonely and alone. Practice the experience.
- Maintain or develop personal goals with small steps.
- Spend some time out "where people are" without necessarily being with a particular person. For instance, go out to dinner, shopping, or to a movie alone.
- Get involved with groups where you can meet many different kinds of people to avoid isolation.
- Focus on connecting to nature or others (e.g., pets, causes, friends).
- Examine patterns in your life and relationships. Focus on how to help make changes without self-criticism.
- Nurture yourself by participating in special pleasures.
