As a Syracuse, NY native looking for a university with a Division 1 lacrosse team and a strong academic reputation to support her as a student-athlete, Lauren Roberts ’14 chose RMU.
Roberts earned her bachelor’s in biology with a concentration in pre-medicine while completing the University’s Honors Program.
“Going into college, I knew that I wanted to take advantage of as many opportunities as possible and get involved in a variety of things,” says Roberts, patient discharge advocate at the Crouse Hospital in Syracuse, NY. “RMU really allowed me to do this by creating an environment that encourages students to branch out, rather than pick one thing and dedicate yourself to only that.”
During the summer of 2013, she interned at Crouse Hospital, and through her connections, learned of a job opening. As the patient discharge advocate, Roberts is responsible for calling patients who have been identified as high risk for being readmitted to follow up regarding their discharge instructions and discuss any medical, social, or environmental concerns they have. Roberts will begin classes at Drexel University Assistant Physician School in September 2016 to become a physician assistant.
“I felt very prepared for the job and have been able to implement knowledge that I learned in my Biology Pre-Med studies, as well as skills I learned in my honors classes, such as Business and Professional Communications and Argument and Research,” says Roberts. “As the patient discharge advocate, I also have had the good fortune of learning and gaining more insight into the world of medicine that I feel will be invaluable later in life as a physician’s assistant.”
As co-captain of the women’s lacrosse team, Roberts took on roles in a variety of extracurricular activities such as the Colonial Leadership Academy, Pre-Med Club, and national honor societies. She credits Maria Kalevitch, dean of the School of Engineering Mathematics, and Science for her participation in these activities by always encouraging her to expand her reach and involvement.
“Lauren holds a special place in my heart,” says, Kalevitch. “She represents what RMU is all about through her academic excellence, her leadership abilities, as well as her compassion and commitment to others.”
A recipient of four scholarships: athletic scholarship, academic merit scholarship, RMU Patriot Scholar Scholarship, and the Welling Fruehauf Colonial Athletic Club Endowed Scholarship, Roberts is most thankful for her education she received.
